Wherever I’ve lived I’ve always had one or two breakfast spots (hangouts) that were mine. And, I think having a ‘“breakfast joint” to call your own is as essential to any breakfast denizen as a hot cup of coffee, eggs done your way, or fried pork of any kind.
When time allows I escape to my spot, usually a diner within 10-20 minutes drive, and savor breakfast with a book or a notebook. Because I make a point of going outside of rush hour (or busy weekends), they never seem to care how long I stay, and the coffee is almost always topped up for free.
Howard’s Way – Makes me feel welcome
For me, the key elements in “my place”, wherever I’m living at the time, come down to consistency of menu, and service. Once I’ve established that the coffee isn’t burnt, the omelets are light enough, the pancakes cooked through, and the sausage is spicy enough, I’m your Huckleberry.
From there, provided the menu doesn’t change and you make me feel welcome, I’d be inclined to sporadically drop my breakfast coins in your hand until, well, until then…..
I like a place that will let me sit and savor. For that reason, though they aren’t exactly “joints”, I do like a good sidewalk cafe.
Howard’s Way – Sidewalk Cafe Irish Style
So, it’s okay that my current local spot, “Howard’s Way” in Churchtown south Dublin is more of a neighborhood bistro/sidewalk cafe. It’s just across the street, the service is excellent, the pancakes are the perfect blend of plate-filling crepe cooked through, they make their own Irish brown soda bread and white pudding, and the coffee is quite decent even if the cups are a bit dandified.
For me, the perfect “local” breakfast joint, wherever local may be at the time, all comes down to the trinity: food, service, and atmosphere.
