Mike & Patty’s: Boston’s best Breakfast Sandwich

Mike & Patty’s in downtown Boston is a charming sandwich shop with hot coffee and a few stellar breakfast options for locals or visitors in need of a breakfast nosh. Tucked away in a mostly residential neighborhood, this is an upscale breakfast and lunch joint that caters mainly to locals and the few others who know about it. With just 3-4 window counter seats (six if you really push it), Mike & Patty’s is basically a food truck without the wheels.

On my visit, the breakfast torta (two fried eggs, cheddar cheese, jalapenos, avocado, salsa, black beans, and potatoes on a roll) was good and filling. And the coffee was hot, fresh, and good, but not great.  That said, this is not a coffee shop; the staff here are focused on cranking out inventive, sandwich-based meals in a really small space.  Mike & Patty’s is known for it house made mayo, and though I’m not a mayo guy, I gave it a go. I found it kind of tangy, with a Russian dressing thousand-island vibe. It was definitely not to my breakfast taste, but people rave about it. Mike & Patty’s also features Iggy’s breads, and uncured nitrate free products from California-based Zoe’s Meats, both of which are quite good and have a strong and loyal following.  In addition to the creative plates, the shop’s tiny size makes it worth a visit just to marvel at the amazing culinary feats performed in such a minuscule workspace.  The open plan kitchen makes it easy to appreciate the work and chat with the friendly staff.  That said, it’s not just the staff who are friendly at this Bay Village favorite.

When I arrived at Mike & Patty’s just after opening on an, “any ol’ Wednesday” in early April, a steady stream of locals were in and out for coffee on their way to work. While that did make it challenging to grab a seat, that friendly local vibe was infectious, and made it easy to ask for local advice on what to order, and what to see during my few days in town.

I found Mike & Patty’s to be a touch too cozy for dine-in comfort, but the staff and regulars are incredibly friendly and welcoming. While not my idea of a local diner joint, the food at Mike & Patty’s is really good. The coffee is hot and fresh, and, because it’s conveniently located within walking distance of Boston Common and other downtown attractions and businesses, Mike & Patty’s is a great way to kick off a day of tourist activities or downtown business appointments.

Cop Cachet: Medium – A good local spot, but probably not on the average cop’s beat, except maybe as a quick coffee stop.  But the clientele is almost exclusively local, friendly and willing to share local lore with visitors.

Mug Meter: None. Paper cups.
