Veggie Galaxy in Cambridge, Massachusetts: A Classic Diner with a Twist

As a card-carrying, sausage-eating southern boy I’ll admit that I had serious doubts about including Veggie Galaxy in Cambridge Massachusetts on my diner list for breakfast in Boston.  But I must take my lumps and admit I was wrong.  This sprawling diner doesn’t serve tofu eggs, broccoli waffles and kale grits.  They have a jam-packed menu of diner classics that are done well.

The eggs arrived fluffy and light.  The pancake stack was huge and flavorful.  However, it was so huge that some of the centers were not quite finished cooking. The fruit on top was fresh and delicious.

In particular the apple butter was a nice surprise that gave the whole affair a wonderful cinnamon complexity. The rye toast was good but not the best I’ve ever had.  The home fries were a tad greasy, but perfectly cooked, and quite addictive. As a fan of diner cooking I was thrilled to watch them upend a pitcher of oil and proceed to work it through the mound of home fries on the flattop.

This diner has a massive open kitchen with about 15 counter seats that offer a terrific view of the grill show.  On the day I was there (mid-April, 2015), the crowd packed into the 20 or so large booths included bleary-eyed “morning after” types, pissy college students dragged out for breakfast too early by visiting parents, and the standard suburban weekend brunch crowd.  Veggie Galaxy is a busy place; but in classic diner fashion, there’s a glass pie and cake stand worth ogling as you wait to be seated.

The staff is a bit on the hipster side (with tattoos and piercings on display).  Service is good but not great.  After fifteen minutes there was no check back.  Granted it was a busy sunny Saturday (at 10am), so they were taxed, but still….

On the vegetarian breakfast side, this Cambridge classic offers tofu omelets, tempeh bacon, and tempeh lentil quinoa sausage.  However, the vegetarian options really shine (in terms of variety) on the lunch and dinner menus, where grilled tempeh bacon, smoked tofu, and corned-beef seitan are in evidence.  And, Veggie Galaxy has an entire menu devoted to dessert.   That said, I’ll admit to having stuck to the breakfast menu. Yet the vegetarian options looked excellent, and the hungry masses seemed well pleased.

Veggie Galaxy also has separate gluten-free menus for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert, not just a small section added at the last minute.

Overall, Veggie Galaxy is a big chrome-plated booth and open cook pit diner in a college town.  The food is hot, fresh and sustaining, the coffee is hot, and the service about what you’d expect from college staff with their eyes on bigger and better things.
